UI/UX design Web Design

Overview

Yakima, a premium roof rack brand, helps people carry their favourite gear on their vehicles to destinations all over the world. Venturing out on the open road creates shared experiences and memories that last a lifetime. Yakima entrusted Follow to redesign and develop their online platform to support not just Australia and New Zealand but also across Europe and South Africa.

Working as the only digital designer within the Brisbane team at Follow. My role in this project was to create wireframes, design the interfaces for mobile and desktop, create interactive prototypes and prepare the design handoff.

ROLE

UI/UX Designer

The Challenge

The site needs to improve web functionality and usability, the site was difficult to search and customers need to educated to buy the right products. I was challenged to create better user flows and user experience for finding suitable products.

The Solution

Wireframing

The engagement began with a series of workshops to determine the broader strategy and to establish the needs and behaviours of Yakima’s key target audiences. Follow also conducted research and did user interviews. After going through several discussions and project brief, I started working on an improved version of Fit My Car user flows. I created wireframes for product categories page, product detail page, and product searching flow.

Design

Once the wireframes were approved, it was ready to move into the visual design phase. The new homepage allows users to browse products by activity, apart from product categories, I add a new user flow to find products by gear location.

Find my car

The vehicle finder tool allows users to find the perfect roof racks system for vehicle

Category Pages and Product Listing Pages

I designed content pages to provide more information about Yakima. I relabeled all articles, added Guide & Ideas section to allow customers to learn and buy the right products

Design-to-Development Handoff

With the visual design finalized, a high fidelity prototype was built using InVision that could be shared with stakeholders. I created a web style guide and image size guide for development, I uploaded designs to Zeplin and provided assets.

Summary

This was an interesting project to work on. What I have found to be the most challenging part is creating the Fit My Car user flows and building the customer experience. The site launched in 2017.
